Dear Parents/Guardian:
We are very grateful for Principal Ming Wu’s devotion and contribution to the school in the past two years. He
brought in many new ideas. In particular, we have had many successful activities and have transitioned smoothly to
a new campus. Principal Wu has agreed to stay in the administration staff to continue serving our school.
This is my 16th year as an EBCS parent and the 7th year as a staff member. I was the principal during 2005-07.
Why do I come back to serve as the principal again? Is there any new thing I can bring to the school? After 6 years
of experiences in the area of academic affairs, I have the conviction that the Chinese characters is the foundation in
learning Chinese. Unfortunately, this is also the most conspicuous difference between Chinese and Indo-European
languages. Without solid grounding in the characters, all the effect of modern 2nd language teaching methods from
the best teachers in the classroom will be limited. To use an analogy, it is very much like every 3rd grade student
has to memorize the multiplication table. Without it, one cannot go much further in learning mathematics. Therefore
the school administration will focus our effort in checking this goal is achieved. Two hours per week are not enough
to learn a second language. The parents should help their children study at home. In helping the children
memorizing the Chinese characters, the parents should use the same method and attitude as in their help for the
children in memorizing the multiplication table. If both of you are reading this letter in English version, you probably
are not able to help your children in learning Chinese characters at home. Then you need help from outside, like
from relatives, friends, or tutors. If you have problem in finding help, please contact us immediately.
EBCS is a community-based parent-volunteer non-profit Chinese Heritage School serving the East Bay community
since 1981. We ask that you actively get involved in helping us run the school better for our children by joining the
PTA this year.
To participate in the relief fund drive for Southern Taiwan after Typhoon Morakot, I have proposed to the Board to
donate $1,000. We will also place a box in the office for the parents’ donation. Thank you very much for the help!
Yours faithfully,
Ding-Gwo Long
Principal
